Keynote Speaker

Robert KellyRobert Kelly

Artist and educator Robert Kelly is an associate professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts and an adjunct associate professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Calgary where he teaches creativity theory and practice, studio art and curriculum theory and design. Robert has been a featured keynote speaker at lectures and workshops across Canada speaking on creativity and educational practice where he is known for sharing his numerous insightful and humorous anecdotes from his diverse personal journey.

Workshop (A Session): An Educational Culture of Creativity
Join Robert as he explores the transformational areas of personal and professional creative development, the design of environments that support an educational culture of creativity, and the nuts and bolts of creativity within educational practice. Explore the notion of assessing the creative maturity of educators and students and establishing core competencies in the areas of creativity.

Workshop (B Session): Jamming on Creativity in Education
Robert will lead this jam session as a follow up to themes and ideas raised during his keynote presentation. Bring your ideas and questions to this open forum session designed to explore any topic related to creativity, educational practice, or enabling strategies.

Carl LeggoCarl Leggo

Carl is a poet and professor in the Department of Language and Literacy Education at UBC. His research focuses on the experiences of educators, especially how to promote heartful and hopeful relationships in educational communities. His poetry, fiction and scholarly essays have been published in many journals in North America and around the world.


Workshop (A and B Sessions):  "Story Telling - The Heart of Pedagogy ”
We live in stories all the time. We attend to the stories of others. We linger in the stories of dreams, imagination, fantasy, and memory. We read stories in school and at home; we hear stories from friends and strangers; we view stories on television and the internet and movie screens. But, in spite of the pervasive prevalence of stories in our lives, most of us have little confidence about our abilities as story-tellers. Why?"

Dr. Kieran Egan is a Professor in the Faculty of Education at SFU, and the founder and director of the Imaginative Education Research Group (IERG).



Dr. EganDr. Judson is a PostDoctoral Fellow working with the Imaginative Education Research Group and her research interests include professional development, teacher education, imagination and ecological education, social studies education and the Learning in Depth project.

 

Workshop (A Session Only):  "Imaginative Education and Developing Creativity ”
Imaginative Education (IE) is a new approach to education in which the language of imagination guides all stages of the teaching process. By engaging students ’ emotions in learning and, by extension, their imaginations, one enhances the possibilities for more enjoyable and effecting teaching and learning. Participants in this session will not only gain a new, refreshing perspective on teaching and learning.

Dr. BrownDr. Lee Brown

Dr. Brown in a member of the Cherokee Nation and the Wolf Clan. He received his doctorate at UBC and his thesis titled: "Making the Classroom a Healthy Place: The Developed of Affective Competency in Aboriginal Pedagogy". Lee is currently a Post-Doctoral Fellow with the Faculty of Curriculum Studies at UBC.

Workshop (C Session): "Developing Emotional Competency in the Classroom"
The workshop will present a transformational view of learning within a theory of emotional education designed to create emotional competency. Participants will discuss the relationship between emotional energy , values, volition and learning in relation to a culture, transformation and learning.
